Intersil ICL7106CPL 3-1/2 Digit LCD A/D Converter Display Driver 40-Pin DIP Vintage IC
Full Description & History
Vintage Intersil ICL7106CPL high-performance low-power 3-1/2 digit analog-to-digital converter and LCD display driver in a 40-pin plastic DIP package. The ICL7106 integrates the A/D converter, seven-segment decoding, LCD display drive, internal clock, reference functions, and auto-zero circuitry needed to build compact digital measuring instruments.
The device was specifically designed for direct LCD display operation and became widely associated with digital panel meters, handheld digital multimeters, bench instruments, process indicators, and other measurement equipment. It operates from a single 9 V supply and was designed to provide accurate conversion with low power consumption.
The visible 8425 date code indicates an early-1980s production example, making this a genuine vintage Intersil analog/data-conversion IC from the period when dedicated display-converter chips transformed electronic test instrumentation.
Lifecycle: OBSOLETE.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Intersil was founded in 1967 in California and became an important American semiconductor company specializing in analog, mixed-signal, precision, power-management, and data-conversion devices. The company became particularly well known for integrated circuits used in instrumentation, communications, industrial electronics, military/aerospace systems, power management, and precision analog measurement.
The ICL7106 family is one of the best-known Intersil measurement IC designs. Introduced during the era when digital meters were rapidly replacing analog pointer instruments, it condensed much of a complete digital voltmeter into a single integrated circuit. Instead of requiring a separate analog-to-digital converter, clock, decoder, display driver, and numerous support ICs, the ICL7106 incorporated these functions into one package.
The ICL7106 is a dual-slope integrating A/D converter intended for 3-1/2 digit measurement systems. It provides direct drive for a liquid-crystal display and includes automatic zero correction, internal clock circuitry, reference functions, seven-segment decoding, and polarity indication. Its low power requirement made it especially well suited to battery-powered handheld instruments.
The device became strongly associated with digital multimeters and panel meters during the late 1970s and 1980s. Chips of this architecture were used in voltage meters, current meters, resistance-measurement instruments, temperature displays, laboratory equipment, industrial process indicators, battery-operated test instruments, and numerous OEM measuring devices.
The CPL suffix identifies the commercial-temperature 40-pin plastic DIP version. The original non-lead-free ICL7106CPL was eventually discontinued as semiconductor packaging and environmental standards changed, while later compatible variants continued the architecture.
Intersil was later acquired by Renesas Electronics, bringing the historic Intersil analog product families into the Renesas portfolio. Original Intersil-branded examples such as this one therefore remain useful for vintage repair and also represent an identifiable piece of semiconductor history.
Legacy or discontinued stock no longer in normal production flow. Future supply may be limited.
