RCA CA3078AS Micropower Operational Amplifier TO-5 8-Pin Metal Can NOS Pair
Full Description & History
Genuine vintage RCA CA3078AS micropower operational amplifier in the classic 8-lead TO-5 metal-can package. The CA3078A family was designed for very low-power analog applications while providing adjustable operating current and useful output capability.
The CA3078AS is an extended-temperature version intended for demanding analog, instrumentation, communications, control, and battery-powered applications. Its metal-can construction is characteristic of higher-grade semiconductor packaging from the period and is particularly desirable today for restoration work and vintage-component collections.
The devices shown are original RCA-marked examples with eight intact leads and visible H419 case coding.
Lifecycle: OBSOLETE.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: RCA, the Radio Corporation of America, was established in 1919 and became one of the most influential American electronics companies of the twentieth century. RCA played major roles in radio broadcasting, television, communications, vacuum tubes, semiconductor development, consumer electronics, military electronics, and professional equipment.
RCA’s semiconductor operations produced extensive families of transistors, CMOS logic, linear integrated circuits, RF devices, and specialized analog components. The CA-prefix series became especially associated with RCA linear and analog integrated circuits.
The CA3078 family came from an era when monolithic operational amplifiers were increasingly replacing discrete transistor amplifier stages in instrumentation, portable electronics, communications equipment, telemetry, control systems, and other analog circuits. Micropower operational amplifiers were particularly valuable where equipment had to operate from batteries or where standby current needed to remain extremely low.
The CA3078A architecture allowed designers to balance operating current against circuit performance, making it useful in specialized low-power analog applications. Period applications for this class of device included portable instrumentation, telemetry equipment, alarm systems, medical electronics, control circuitry, and experimental analog designs.
The TO-5 metal-can package was widely used during the 1960s through 1980s for professional, industrial, instrumentation, aerospace-oriented, and higher-reliability semiconductor applications. Metal packaging offered mechanical strength and environmental protection and is now strongly associated with vintage American semiconductor construction.
Original RCA-branded metal-can integrated circuits have become increasingly desirable for restoration projects because RCA semiconductor production disappeared through later corporate changes and acquisitions. Surviving NOS examples also have collector interest because they represent the American semiconductor industry of the period and preserve original RCA package markings and construction.
Legacy or discontinued stock no longer in normal production flow. Future supply may be limited.
Pipeline quantities are informational and may change after arrival, inspection, sorting, testing, or donor teardown.

Suitable for equipment and circuits originally designed for the RCA CA3078A or CA3078AS where the TO-5 package, pinout, supply requirements, compensation, biasing, and electrical specifications match. Potential applications include vintage instrumentation, telemetry equipment, battery-powered analog electronics, communications equipment, alarm systems, medical electronics, industrial controls, and experimental analog circuits. Always verify the original schematic and pinout before substitution.
