Full Description & History

Vintage ceramic hybrid integrated circuit with gold-plated leads and the package opened to expose the internal hybrid circuitry, semiconductor die, passive components, conductive traces, and bond connections. This device is being offered as a collectible semiconductor specimen, display piece, educational example, or microscopy subject.

Lifecycle: OBSOLETE

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Ceramic hybrid microcircuits were used extensively in specialized industrial, military, aerospace, instrumentation, communications, and high-reliability electronic equipment. Unlike conventional single-die integrated circuits, hybrid assemblies could combine semiconductor dies, resistors, capacitors, and other components on a common substrate inside a ceramic package.

Gold plating and gold bonding were commonly used in high-reliability electronic assemblies because of gold's corrosion resistance and dependable electrical connection properties. Exposed examples such as this provide a direct view of an older method of microelectronic construction that has significant technical and collector interest.
