Texas Instruments TPD4S012DRYR 4-Channel USB ESD TVS Protection Diode Array 14 PCS
Full Description & History
14 PCS Texas Instruments TPD4S012DRYR four-channel TVS diode arrays designed for electrostatic-discharge protection of USB high-speed, USB On-The-Go, and USB charger interfaces.
The TPD4S012 integrates ESD clamps for USB D+, D-, ID, and VBUS-related protection in an extremely compact 6-pin USON surface-mount package measuring approximately 1.45 x 1.0 mm.
The USB signal channels provide approximately 0.8 pF typical capacitance, allowing the device to protect high-speed data lines while supporting USB data rates above 480 Mbps. The device provides ±10 kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact-discharge protection and is designed with 15 V tolerance on the USB VBUS line.
Typical applications include USB-equipped portable electronics, computers, digital cameras, GPS equipment, communications devices, chargers, and embedded electronics requiring protection from static-electricity events and electrical transients.
The original distributor package identifies country of origin China and date code 1723, corresponding to production during the 23rd week of 2017.
LIFECYCLE STATUS: ACTIVE
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
USB became one of the most important standardized electronic interfaces beginning in the late 1990s and expanded rapidly through the USB 2.0 era of the 2000s. As USB ports became common on computers, cameras, mobile devices, communications equipment, and portable electronics, protecting their exposed connector pins from electrostatic discharge became increasingly important.
A USB connector is routinely touched by users and connected to cables that can accumulate static charge. A discharge that is harmless to a person can contain enough voltage to damage the microscopic structures inside modern integrated circuits.
Early protection methods could add too much capacitance to high-speed data lines, degrading signal quality. Specialized low-capacitance ESD-protection arrays were therefore developed to protect USB signals while allowing high-speed digital data to pass with minimal disturbance.
The TPD4S012 represents this generation of purpose-designed USB protection technology. Texas Instruments combined four protection channels into a miniature surface-mount package, allowing several exposed USB connections to be protected with a single component.
Its approximately 0.8 pF signal-line capacitance was designed to accommodate USB 2.0 high-speed operation at 480 Mbps and above while providing system-level ESD protection.
The device also incorporates higher-voltage tolerance on the VBUS connection, an important feature for charger and USB On-The-Go applications where the power line may experience conditions different from the sensitive data lines.
Protection devices such as the TPD4S012 are normally placed very close to the physical USB connector so an incoming static discharge can be diverted before it reaches processors, USB transceivers, interface controllers, or other sensitive circuitry.
The TPD4S012DRYR remains an active Texas Instruments production component. These particular parts are original distributor stock carrying a 2017 production date.
