Erie N500 7-45 pF Vintage Ceramic Trimmer Capacitor 2 PCS Pair
Full Description & History
2 PCS vintage Erie N500 adjustable ceramic trimmer capacitors with a nominal capacitance range of 7-45 pF.
These classic ceramic variable capacitors use a rotating ceramic element and silvered electrode construction to provide a small adjustable capacitance for RF tuning and alignment applications.
The N500 marking identifies the negative-temperature-coefficient ceramic characteristic traditionally used where controlled capacitance change with temperature was desirable. The 7-45 marking identifies the nominal adjustable capacitance range.
This style of trimmer was widely suited to oscillator circuits, tuned RF stages, filters, transmitter and receiver circuits, frequency-adjustment networks, amateur-radio equipment, communications electronics, and vintage laboratory equipment.
One capacitor from this pair was bench measured with a DER EE DE-5000 and adjusted from approximately 7 pF to 50 pF, closely corresponding to the original 7-45 pF nominal range.
LIFECYCLE STATUS: DISCONTINUED
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Erie was an important American manufacturer of ceramic electronic components during the vacuum-tube and early semiconductor eras. Its products included ceramic capacitors, resistors, feed-through components, and adjustable ceramic trimmers used throughout radio, communications, military, industrial, and laboratory electronics.
Ceramic trimmer capacitors became important as radio equipment moved toward increasingly stable and compact tuned circuits. A fixed capacitor could establish the approximate circuit value, while a small trimmer allowed a technician to make the final alignment after the equipment was assembled.
Adjustable capacitors in the single-digit to tens-of-picofarads range were especially useful at radio frequencies. Small capacitance changes could shift oscillator frequency, peak a tuned circuit, adjust a filter, or compensate for component and wiring tolerances.
The N500 temperature characteristic was part of a family of temperature-compensating ceramic formulations developed for RF circuitry. Designers could select ceramic materials with specific temperature behavior to help compensate for frequency drift caused by coils, capacitors, and other components changing characteristics as equipment warmed up.
Trimmers of this general Erie construction appeared during the mid-20th-century radio era and were used in amateur-radio transmitters and receivers, communications equipment, RF test equipment, oscillators, filters, and other precision tuned circuits.
Their ceramic construction, exposed adjustment mechanism, mounting holes, and large solder terminals are characteristic of an era when electronic equipment was expected to be aligned and serviced by a technician rather than simply replaced as an assembly.
Today these original adjustable ceramic capacitors are useful for restoration of vintage RF equipment, period-style radio construction, oscillator and filter projects, and repair situations where a modern miniature trimmer may not provide the same physical mounting arrangement or vintage appearance.
