National Semiconductor MM5601AN / CD4001AE Vintage Quad 2-Input NOR Gate CMOS IC
Full Description & History
Vintage National Semiconductor MM5601AN / CD4001AE CMOS logic integrated circuit in a 14-pin DIP through-hole package.
The MM5601AN is a quad 2-input NOR gate containing four independent NOR logic gates. The device is additionally marked CD4001AE, identifying its functional relationship to the early CD4001 CMOS logic family.
Each NOR gate produces a HIGH output only when both inputs are LOW. This basic logic function was widely used for control logic, gating, signal combining, oscillators, latches, timing circuits, switching systems, digital interfaces, and many other applications.
This IC carries the National Semiconductor logo and production marking 403. The three-digit manufacturing code is consistent with week 03 of a year ending in 4. Because the marking alone does not establish the decade with certainty, an exact production year is not assigned.
The CD4001/MM5601 family also has genuine vintage gaming history. CD4001 quad NOR gates were used in coin-operated arcade hardware and early home video-game circuitry, where CMOS logic was useful for timing, control, signal generation, and interface functions. A CD4001 is specifically documented in Sega's Congo Bongo arcade hardware.
LIFECYCLE STATUS: OBSOLETE
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The MM5601A belongs to the formative generation of CMOS digital logic developed during the early 1970s.
National Semiconductor was actively promoting the MM5601A as a quad 2-input NOR gate by 1972, during the period when CMOS was emerging as an important alternative to bipolar TTL logic. CMOS offered exceptionally low static power consumption and the ability to operate over a relatively broad supply-voltage range, characteristics that made the technology increasingly attractive for portable, battery-powered, control, instrumentation, and consumer electronics.
The broader 4000-series CMOS family became one of the most influential standardized logic families in electronics. Functions included gates, counters, flip-flops, multiplexers, registers, oscillators, and other digital building blocks that engineers could combine into complete electronic systems.
The 4001 was one of the family's fundamental logic devices. Its four independent 2-input NOR gates could perform straightforward logic functions or be interconnected into oscillators, latches, timers, pulse generators, and more complicated Boolean networks.
NOR gates have particular importance in digital electronics because NOR is a universal logic function. In principle, any Boolean logic operation can be constructed entirely from interconnected NOR gates.
Early CMOS devices such as the MM5601A also represent an important period of semiconductor competition and second-sourcing. Multiple manufacturers produced functionally related versions of standardized CMOS functions, allowing equipment builders to source equivalent logic devices from more than one semiconductor supplier.
By the mid-1970s the CD4001 and related CMOS devices were common enough to appear throughout hobby electronics, instrumentation, industrial systems, consumer products, synthesizers, and emerging electronic entertainment equipment.
CMOS logic also found a place in early video-game technology. CD4001-family devices appeared in video-game and arcade circuitry for timing, switching, interface, and control functions. This makes original-period examples useful not only for general vintage electronics repair but also for restoration of classic gaming hardware.
National Semiconductor became one of the major American semiconductor manufacturers of the twentieth century and produced extensive families of analog, digital, memory, and interface devices. The company was acquired by Texas Instruments in 2011, making original National Semiconductor-branded ICs recognizable artifacts of an earlier semiconductor era.
Legacy or discontinued stock no longer in normal production flow. Future supply may be limited.
Pipeline quantities are informational and may change after arrival, inspection, sorting, testing, or donor teardown.
