National Semiconductor DM7427N / DM7474N Vintage TTL Logic IC Pair 2 PCS
Full Description & History
2 PCS vintage National Semiconductor 7400-series TTL logic integrated circuits supplied as a mixed functional pair consisting of one DM7427N and one DM7474N in 14-pin DIP through-hole packages.
The DM7427N contains three independent 3-input NOR gates. This type of logic device was used for decoding, gating, control logic, state detection, signal qualification, and numerous other digital functions.
The DM7474N contains two independent positive-edge-triggered D-type flip-flops with complementary outputs and asynchronous preset and clear functions. The 7474 became an important general-purpose storage, timing, synchronization, and control building block in early digital electronics.
Both devices belong to the original bipolar 7400-series TTL generation and are useful for restoration and repair of vintage computers, industrial controls, communications equipment, laboratory instruments, arcade electronics, and other legacy digital systems.
The devices carry National Semiconductor three-digit production markings 633 and 627. These codes identify production weeks 33 and 27 of a year ending in 6. Because the abbreviated three-digit markings do not independently establish the decade, an exact production year is not assigned without additional traceability information.
LIFECYCLE STATUS: OBSOLETE
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The 7400-series TTL family became one of the defining technologies of digital electronics beginning in the 1960s and expanding dramatically through the 1970s and 1980s. Before highly integrated programmable logic devices and microcontrollers absorbed many control functions, electronic systems were routinely constructed from dozens or hundreds of individual logic ICs.
National Semiconductor became an important American supplier of compatible TTL logic devices and marketed its digital logic products under DM-series designations. National devices were widely encountered in computers, communications equipment, instrumentation, industrial controls, consumer electronics, and other digital hardware.
The DM7427N represents a fundamental combinational-logic function. Its three separate 3-input NOR gates could be used to combine and decode multiple digital signals. NOR logic, like NAND logic, is functionally complete and can be interconnected to implement complex Boolean logic systems.
The DM7474N performs a very different but equally important function. Its two D-type flip-flops can capture and retain binary states on clock transitions. Flip-flops became essential building blocks for counters, state machines, timing circuits, frequency division, synchronization, registers, control circuitry, and many other sequential-logic applications.
7400-series TTL was especially important during the classic arcade era. Early arcade circuit boards relied heavily on discrete TTL devices for timing, video generation, address decoding, counters, control logic, and game-state functions. The 7474 family in particular is documented in original arcade hardware and remains a useful repair component for vintage game boards.
National Semiconductor continued as a major semiconductor manufacturer for decades before becoming part of Texas Instruments in 2011. Original National-branded components therefore represent a distinct period of American semiconductor history and can be desirable when repairing or restoring equipment with period-correct parts.
This pair provides two different examples of classic TTL design: the DM7427N for combinational NOR logic and the DM7474N for sequential flip-flop logic.
Legacy or discontinued stock no longer in normal production flow. Future supply may be limited.
Pipeline quantities are informational and may change after arrival, inspection, sorting, testing, or donor teardown.
