Full Description & History

1 PCS vintage Gordos 831A3 molded reed relays in through-hole packages.

The 831A3 belongs to the compact Gordos reed-relay family produced for electronic switching applications where small physical size, electrical isolation, low contact resistance, and fast operation were important. These devices were commonly suited to instrumentation, test equipment, communications electronics, industrial controls, computer-related equipment, and other circuit-board switching applications.

Unlike a conventional open-frame electromechanical relay, a reed relay uses magnetically operated contacts sealed inside a small glass capsule. The reed switch is surrounded by an electromagnetic coil, allowing a relatively compact component to provide isolated switching with very little mechanical mass.

These two components are vintage donor components showing normal cosmetic evidence of previous installation and removal.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Gordos Corporation was an established American manufacturer of reed switches and relays during the growth of solid-state and hybrid electronic equipment in the 1960s and 1970s. The company became particularly associated with compact reed-relay technology used in communications, instrumentation, industrial electronics, automated test equipment, and early computer-related systems.

Reed relays filled an important technological gap during this era. Semiconductor switching was advancing rapidly, but designers still needed electrically isolated contacts capable of switching analog signals, low-level measurements, control lines, and other circuits without directly connecting the controlling electronics to the switched signal.

The reed relay provided that isolation while being considerably smaller and faster than many traditional armature relays. Its sealed reed contacts also helped protect the switching surfaces from contamination, making the technology particularly attractive for low-level signal and precision applications.

By the 1970s Gordos offered extensive families of molded DIP-style and miniature reed relays intended for direct installation on printed circuit boards. This packaging reflected the industry's transition away from large chassis-mounted components toward increasingly compact board-level electronics.

Vintage Gordos relays are now encountered in older industrial equipment, laboratory instruments, communications systems, control electronics, and specialized circuit boards. Exact-number replacements can matter during restoration because coil characteristics, contact arrangement, package dimensions, and pin configuration must match the original circuit.

The 831A3 is part of that earlier generation of American reed-relay technology and represents the period when electromechanical switching was being engineered into increasingly compact semiconductor-style packages.
