Full Description & History

1 PCS original Hitachi HN462716G ultraviolet-erasable programmable read-only memory IC in a 24-pin ceramic DIP package with quartz erase window. Device is marked HN462716G and JAPAN. This example has standard metal leads, not gold-finished leads.

The HN462716G is a 16Kbit EPROM organized as 2048 x 8 bits, providing 2,048 bytes of nonvolatile programmable memory. Devices of this type were used for program code, firmware, game data, lookup tables, control programs, and other permanent-memory functions in early microprocessor-based electronics.

LIFECYCLE: OBSOLETE. The Hitachi HN462716G is a discontinued legacy EPROM and is no longer in current production. Original Hitachi ceramic-window devices are now primarily encountered as vintage repair, restoration, programming, and collector stock.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The HN462716G belongs to the 2716 generation of ultraviolet-erasable EPROM memory introduced during the rapid expansion of microprocessor-controlled equipment in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

A major advantage of UV EPROM technology was the ability to erase previously programmed data by exposing the silicon die through the quartz window to ultraviolet light. The chip could then be programmed again with new firmware or data. This made EPROMs extremely useful during development, servicing, upgrades, and repair.

The 2716 family became common in early arcade machines, computers, industrial controllers, test equipment, communications electronics, and other digital systems. Arcade boards frequently used socketed EPROMs to store game program code, graphics information, sound data, and control routines.

Original ceramic Hitachi EPROMs such as the HN462716G represent the programmable-memory technology used during this early digital era and remain useful when repairing or restoring equipment designed around period-correct 2716 memory devices.
