TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SN74LS38N QUAD 2-INPUT NAND BUFFER OPEN-COLLECTOR DIP-14 VINTAGE TTL IC
$5.99
Original vintage Texas Instruments SN74LS38N TTL logic integrated circuit in a 14-pin plastic DIP package. The SN74LS38N contains four independent 2-input NAND buffer gates with open-collector outputs and belongs to the classic 74LS Low-Power Schottky TTL logic family.
LIFECYCLE STATUS: ACTIVE.
These are genuine vintage Texas Instruments production devices dating from the late 1970s. Visible examples carry production markings including 7823, 7834 and 7840A, consistent with approximately 1978 manufacture. Some pieces also carry period assembly-location markings including EL SALVADOR.
This listing and price are for one IC. Eleven pieces are available. Production/date markings may vary between individual pieces while the primary part number remains SN74LS38N.
The open-collector outputs allow the device to interface with external pull-up resistors and make it useful for wired logic, signal interfacing, indicator driving, control lines and other TTL logic applications.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The 74LS series became one of the most widely used logic families of the late 1970s and 1980s. Low-Power Schottky TTL offered improved speed and reduced power consumption compared with earlier standard TTL families and became common throughout computers, arcade electronics, communications equipment, industrial controllers, instrumentation and digital control systems.
The SN74LS38 contains four independent NAND buffer gates with open-collector outputs. Open-collector logic was especially useful when several devices needed to share a signal line, when external voltage pull-ups were required or when logic circuitry needed to control loads through an external interface.
Texas Instruments was one of the major manufacturers of 7400-series logic and produced enormous numbers of these devices for commercial, industrial and consumer electronics.
Original late-1970s Texas Instruments LS-series devices are useful today for period-correct restoration of vintage digital equipment and for repairs where matching original logic technology is desirable.
Recovered from donor equipment for reuse in radio repair, restoration, or parts recovery work.
Pipeline quantities are informational and may change after arrival, inspection, sorting, testing, or donor teardown.
Compatible Radios / Boards
Suitable for equipment specifying the SN74LS38N, 74LS38 or a verified compatible quadruple 2-input NAND buffer with open-collector outputs. Applicable to vintage computers, arcade electronics, industrial controllers, communications equipment, test equipment, digital control boards and general TTL logic repair.
Verify pinout, supply voltage, open-collector output requirements, pull-up resistance and circuit compatibility before substitution.
RF Boneyard Bench Notes
Not electrically tested. Packages show readable Texas Instruments markings and normal vintage condition. Individual pieces may show lead bending, oxidation, solder residue or other evidence of previous installation. Leads should be inspected and carefully aligned before installation.
