Phase-locked loops became extremely important in radio and communications equipment because they allowed electronic systems to track, recover, generate, and synchronize frequencies without relying entirely on large collections of discrete analog components.
The NE564 was a particularly capable member of this family because of its comparatively high operating frequency. Its internal circuitry allowed operation to approximately 50 MHz, substantially extending PLL applications into higher-speed communications and RF-related systems.
