Original Commodore 1540009-02C internal power transformer used in the classic Commodore 1541 5.25-inch floppy disk drive power supply system. The 1540009-02C transformer is associated with Commodore's internal linear power-supply design used in the full-size 1541 disk drive. The transformer itself does not directly provide regulated 5V or 12V DC. Its approximately 9VAC and 16VAC secondary outputs are rectified, filtered and regulated by circuitry inside the drive.
Because several Commodore transformer and drive revisions existed, primary wiring and mains-voltage configuration must be verified against the correct Commodore service documentation before connection to AC power.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The Commodore 1541 became one of the most recognizable floppy disk drives of the home-computer era and was designed primarily for systems including the Commodore 64 and VIC-20. Unlike the later compact 1541-II, the original 1541 incorporated its mains power supply directly inside the disk-drive enclosure.
Commodore's service documentation identifies the 1540009 family as the power transformer used in the 1540/1541 power supply assembly. The transformer steps mains voltage down to two low-voltage AC supplies. One secondary supplies approximately 9VAC for the circuit that ultimately produces the regulated +5V rail, while the other supplies approximately 16VAC for the circuit that produces the regulated +12V rail.
The internal transformer and linear regulators contributed considerably to the weight and heat associated with the original 1541. That substantial internal power-supply architecture is one of the major physical differences between the original full-size 1541 and later Commodore disk-drive designs that moved the power supply outside the drive enclosure.
Original transformers have become useful restoration components because modern replacements may not duplicate the original chassis dimensions, mounting points, wiring arrangement and dual-secondary configuration.
