Genuine vintage National Semiconductor 74F240PC FAST TTL octal inverting buffer and line driver integrated circuit in a 20-pin through-hole DIP package. Sold individually as one IC.

The 74F240PC contains eight inverting buffer/driver channels organized as two independent groups of four. Each group uses an active-low output-enable control that can place its outputs into a high-impedance 3-state condition. This makes the device useful for high-speed digital bus buffering, address-line driving, data routing, logic isolation, clock distribution, memory interfacing, and other TTL logic applications.

This original National Semiconductor 74F240PC is an obsolete legacy-production integrated circuit. National Semiconductor no longer manufactures this device under the original National branding, making authentic older examples useful for maintenance and restoration of equipment originally designed around FAST TTL logic. The underlying 74F240 logic function has remained available from other manufacturers, but the original National Semiconductor 74F240PC is discontinued production.

The visible device marking includes 74F240PC and date code 9012, consistent with early 1990 production-era semiconductor stock.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

National Semiconductor was one of the major American semiconductor manufacturers of the twentieth century and produced extensive families of analog, digital logic, interface, memory, power-management, and communications devices. National components became common throughout computers, industrial controls, test equipment, communications hardware, consumer electronics, arcade-era digital systems, and other electronic equipment.

The 74F family represented the FAST generation of bipolar TTL logic developed for systems requiring higher switching speeds than conventional standard and LS TTL families. FAST TTL devices became important in digital buses, memory systems, control logic, computing hardware, instrumentation, industrial equipment, and high-speed board-level interfaces during the 1980s and 1990s.

The 74F240 became particularly useful as a high-current bus interface because its eight independently controlled 3-state inverting outputs could isolate and drive heavily loaded address, control, and logic lines. Devices of this type are relevant to vintage arcade PCB servicing as well as computer, industrial, communications, and test-equipment repair where 74F240-compatible logic is specified.

National Semiconductor was acquired by Texas Instruments in 2011, ending National as an independent semiconductor manufacturer. Original National-branded 74F240PC devices are therefore legacy obsolete stock and can be desirable for period-correct repair and restoration.

Compatible Radios / Boards

Suitable for vintage arcade PCB repair, legacy computer hardware, industrial control boards, communications equipment, digital test equipment, instrumentation, memory-address circuitry, bus interfaces, and other equipment specifying a 74F240-compatible FAST TTL octal inverting buffer in a 20-pin DIP package. Appropriate for arcade logic and bus-driver replacement where the original circuit specifically calls for a 74F240 or verified compatible device. Always verify schematic, pinout, logic family, package, supply voltage, timing, and drive-current requirements before substitution.
