Genuine vintage Signetics 74F240N FAST TTL octal inverting buffer and line driver integrated circuit in a 20-pin through-hole DIP package. Sold individually as one IC.
The 74F240N contains eight inverting buffer/driver channels arranged as two independent groups of four. Each group has its own active-low output-enable input, allowing the outputs to enter a high-impedance 3-state condition. This original Signetics-branded 74F240N is an obsolete legacy semiconductor. Signetics production of this device has long ended, making original examples useful for vintage equipment repair, restoration, and period-correct replacement work. The underlying 74F240 logic function remains available from some other semiconductor manufacturers, but original Signetics-branded devices are obsolete.

The 74F240 became particularly useful as a bus interface device because its eight high-current 3-state outputs could drive memory address lines, control buses, clock paths, and other heavily loaded digital signals.
