X5R is a Class 2 ceramic dielectric intended for applications where relatively high capacitance is required in a very small package. The X5R designation specifies operation from -55°C through +85°C with capacitance variation controlled within approximately ±15% over that temperature range under the dielectric specification.

At only about 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm, this 0402 device provides a full 1uF nominal capacitance while occupying very little PCB area. Designers and repair technicians should therefore verify the requirements of the original circuit rather than assuming that every nominal 1uF 25V 0402 capacitor will behave identically under operating conditions.

TDK currently lists C1005X5R1E105M050BC as Production (NRND), meaning the component remains in production but is not recommended for new designs. Mouser and Digi-Key likewise identify the exact device as NRND / Not For New Designs.

TDK identifies C1005X5R1E105K050BC as a recommended alternate part number. That alternate has a tighter ±10% capacitance tolerance, but TDK specifically cautions that interchangeability is not guaranteed. Exact circuit requirements should therefore be checked before substitution.

Obtaining 1uF at 25V in a 0402 footprint represents the continuing development of high-capacitance ceramic materials and thin multilayer manufacturing. Older circuit designs frequently required physically larger capacitors to obtain similar capacitance and voltage ratings.

This exact TDK component also has documented engineering use beyond generic PCB applications. Renesas documentation for the P9028AC wireless-power evaluation platform specifies C1005X5R1E105M050BC as 1uF capacitors at reference locations C24 and C32. The exact TDK part has also appeared in other wireless-power evaluation hardware, illustrating its use as compact support and decoupling capacitance in sophisticated power-management circuitry.
