Vintage Fairchild Semiconductor SN74193N / 9366PC standard-TTL synchronous 4-bit binary up/down counter integrated circuit in a 16-pin DIP package. This original Fairchild device carries the vintage Fairchild logo along with SN74193N, 9366PC, and date code 7419 markings, consistent with manufacture during the 19th week of 1974.
The 74193 is a synchronous four-bit reversible binary counter capable of counting upward or downward through separate UP and DOWN clock inputs. It also provides asynchronous parallel loading, an independent clear function, four binary outputs, and carry and borrow outputs that allow multiple counters to be cascaded for larger counting systems.
This device was designed for classic 5V TTL digital circuitry and was used in computers, computer peripherals, industrial controls, instrumentation, communications equipment, test equipment, timing systems, position counters, event counters, sequence controls, digital displays, machine controls, and other electronic equipment.
The exact original Fairchild 9366PC / SN74193N standard-TTL device represented by this part is OBSOLETE and DISCONTINUED legacy production. Fairchild Semiconductor was one of the pioneering companies of the integrated-circuit industry and played a major role in the development and commercialization of early digital logic. The Fairchild 9366PC was the company’s version of the synchronous four-bit binary up/down counter function standardized as the 74193.
During the 1970s, devices such as the 74193 were important digital building blocks because complete systems were commonly constructed from individual TTL integrated circuits rather than highly integrated microcontrollers or programmable logic. Bidirectional counters could track positions, credits, timing events, addresses, machine states, and other numerical values while providing both increment and decrement capability.
The 74193 also has genuine documented vintage arcade history. Atari Tempest uses a 74193 in its Analog Vector Generator circuitry, Atari Crash ’N Score uses 74193 devices in its original game logic including credit-related circuitry, and Midway Pac-Man documentation shows a 74193 in credit multiplier circuitry.
These applications make an original 1974 Fairchild device especially interesting for vintage arcade PCB repair and period-correct restoration. The device was not arcade-exclusive, however. Its broader history includes computers, industrial machinery, instrumentation, communications equipment, test systems, and many other TTL-era electronic designs.
