Vintage Texas Instruments SN74194J standard-TTL 4-bit bidirectional universal shift register integrated circuit in a 16-pin ceramic DIP package. Three matching NOS devices are available, each carrying the Texas Instruments logo, SN74194J part marking, and date code 7348, consistent with production during the 48th week of 1973.
The SN74194J is a versatile four-bit universal shift register capable of shifting binary data either left or right, accepting parallel data, holding its existing state, and providing parallel outputs. Separate serial inputs are provided for right-shift and left-shift operation, while two mode-control inputs select the operating function. A direct clear input allows the stored data to be reset independently.
This type of universal shift register was widely used in early digital systems for temporary data storage, serial-to-parallel and parallel-to-serial conversion, data movement, sequence control, timing functions, digital display systems, computer peripherals, industrial electronics, communications equipment, instrumentation, test equipment, and other 5V TTL circuitry.
The exact original Texas Instruments SN74194J standard-TTL ceramic-package device is OBSOLETE and DISCONTINUED legacy TI production. Texas Instruments currently supports the later SN74LS194A low-power Schottky family, but that is a later logic-family implementation and should not automatically be assumed to be an exact drop-in substitute in every vintage circuit. Original circuit requirements should be verified before replacement.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The 74194 was developed during the formative period of integrated digital logic when complete electronic systems were frequently constructed from individual 7400-series TTL devices. Universal shift registers were particularly valuable because a single IC could perform several different data-handling operations that otherwise required multiple logic stages.
The 74194 can synchronously load four bits of parallel data, shift stored information to the right, shift it to the left, or retain its current state. This flexibility made it useful in computers, industrial control equipment, communications systems, laboratory instruments, data-processing hardware, digital displays, sequence generators, and many other early electronic systems.
The SN74194J is especially interesting as an early ceramic-package Texas Instruments device. The J suffix identifies the ceramic dual-inline package version, which was considerably more expensive than the common plastic N-package version when these devices were originally sold. These examples date from 1973, placing them near the early commercial era of 7400-series TTL technology.
The 74194 also has genuine documented coin-operated arcade history. Atari used 74194 shift registers in its Stunt Cycle arcade game, where two devices are specified at board locations E1 and E2. Atari Outlaw documentation also identifies the 74194 among the original logic ICs used on the game board. Midway documentation shows a 74194 in the Super Pac-Man video game logic circuitry.
Early arcade hardware depended heavily on individual TTL devices for video generation, motion control, timing, counters, input processing, and game logic. Original 74194 devices therefore remain useful repair stock for technicians restoring period arcade PCBs.
The 74194 was not designed exclusively for arcade machines. Its arcade history represents only one part of a much broader role in vintage computers, industrial electronics, communications systems, instrumentation, and general-purpose digital equipment.
