Vintage Signetics 7406N TTL hex inverting buffer/driver integrated circuit in a 14-pin DIP package. The 7406 contains six independent inverting stages with high-voltage open-collector outputs and was widely used as a digital interface device in computers, arcade machines, industrial controls, communications equipment, instrumentation, test equipment, peripheral circuits, relay drivers, lamp drivers, and other TTL-based electronics.

The 7406 operates from the classic 5V TTL supply range and provides high-current open-collector outputs capable of sinking up to 40 mA. Its output configuration allows external pull-up circuitry and makes the device useful for interfacing TTL logic with loads or circuits requiring more voltage or current capability than a conventional TTL gate. Texas Instruments continues to manufacture the 7406 function today and lists the SN7406 family as ACTIVE, including the SN7406N 14-pin PDIP version.

This original Signetics example is marked with date code 7926, consistent with manufacture during the 26th week of 1979. It is NOS vintage inventory from the period when discrete 7400-series TTL logic was heavily used throughout computer, industrial, communications, consumer, and coin-operated arcade electronics.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

Signetics was one of the pioneering American integrated-circuit manufacturers and became a major supplier of bipolar digital logic and memory devices. Philips acquired Signetics in 1975 and later integrated the operation into Philips Semiconductors; the Signetics company name transitioned to Philips Semiconductors in 1993. Because of that corporate transition, this original Signetics-branded 7406N represents discontinued legacy Signetics production even though the underlying 7406 circuit function itself is still manufactured by other semiconductor companies.

The 7406 became a useful building block wherever designers needed to invert a digital signal while controlling an external load or interfacing with circuitry beyond ordinary TTL output levels. Applications extended well beyond arcade equipment and included early computers and peripherals, industrial machinery, communications hardware, instrumentation, control systems, printers, relay interfaces, indicator circuits, test equipment, and numerous other digital systems.

The same versatility also made 7406 devices valuable in vintage coin-operated arcade electronics. Original arcade boards commonly used large numbers of standard 7400-series TTL devices for buffering, decoding, control, interfacing, and support functions. For arcade restoration, an original late-1970s Signetics part can therefore be useful when repairing period TTL circuitry or when a restorer prefers a manufacturer and date-code style appropriate to the original era. The 7406 is an arcade-era component, but it is not arcade-exclusive and remains useful across a much broader range of vintage electronics.
