LIFECYCLE STATUS: OBSOLETE / DISCONTINUED. The original Mostek MK3882N is no longer manufactured and is now a legacy Z80-family peripheral component. Original Mostek-marked examples are primarily encountered as NOS, vintage surplus, collector stock, and restoration components for early computer, arcade, industrial, and control equipment.
The MK3882N is a genuine Z80-family support IC containing four independently programmable counter/timer channels. Each channel can operate as either a counter or timer, allowing a Z80-based system to generate timing intervals, count external events, generate interrupts, divide frequencies, and provide timing signals required by peripheral hardware. The MK3882N is the standard 2.5 MHz commercial plastic DIP version of Mostek's Z80-CTC.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Mostek was an important American semiconductor manufacturer during the early microprocessor era and became an authorized second-source manufacturer of the Zilog Z80 family. Mostek produced the processor and major support devices under its MK38xx numbering system, including the MK3880 Z80 CPU, MK3881 Z80-PIO, and MK3882 Z80-CTC.
The MK3882 became an important support component in systems built around the Z80 processor. Its four programmable counter/timer channels could provide interrupt timing, event counting, frequency division, peripheral timing, baud-rate support, and other functions without requiring large amounts of external logic.
The Z80 architecture became extremely important in late-1970s and 1980s computers, industrial systems, terminals, instrumentation, communications hardware, and arcade machines. Mostek MK3882-family devices are specifically documented in period arcade hardware. The Bally/Midway Kick-Man parts documentation identifies an MK3882 in the game logic, and the Midway Domino Man documentation also identifies an MK3882. Z80-CTC devices were additionally used across other Bally/Midway MCR-era arcade and pinball hardware.
This makes an original Mostek MK3882N particularly interesting for restorers working on vintage arcade PCBs as well as early Z80 computers and industrial equipment. Compatibility must always be confirmed from the specific board schematic or service manual because not every Z80-based arcade system used a CTC.
