LIFECYCLE STATUS: LEGACY / TRANSFERRED. The original Signetics N7408F is no longer a current-production Signetics device. Historical semiconductor records later carried the part under Philips Semiconductor after the Signetics product lineage was transferred. Today, original Signetics-marked N7408F devices are primarily encountered as vintage, surplus, or restoration stock rather than normal modern production.

The N7408F contains four independent 2-input positive-AND gates using classic bipolar TTL technology. It is a 5V logic device intended for digital gating, control, timing, counters, computers, instrumentation, industrial electronics, communications equipment, and other early digital systems. The F-package version is especially interesting because it uses a ceramic DIP-14 package rather than the more common plastic package found on many later 7408 devices.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

The 7408 was one of the fundamental building blocks of the original 7400-series TTL logic family. Quad AND gates such as the N7408 were widely used during the expansion of digital electronics in the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in computers, laboratory instruments, industrial controllers, counters, timing equipment, communications hardware, and other discrete-logic systems.

Signetics was an important early American integrated-circuit manufacturer and supplied its own versions of many standard 7400-series logic devices. Historical cross-reference documentation identifies the Signetics N7408F alongside contemporary equivalents such as the Texas Instruments SN7408J, Fairchild 7408DC, National Semiconductor DM7408 devices, and other standard 7408-family implementations.

The photographed device is marked N7408F and carries the additional marking 7406. RF Boneyard preserves the 7406 marking as part of the component’s identification and provenance. No exact manufacturing date is being assigned to that marking without verified Signetics factory date-code documentation.

The ceramic, hermetically sealed construction makes the N7408F especially interesting for restoration of early professional, laboratory, industrial, computer, and communications equipment where an original-period TTL device or ceramic package is desirable.
