Genuine Texas Instruments TLV1117-50IDCYR fixed 5V linear voltage regulator supplied as an individual component from unused carrier tape. The TLV1117-50 is designed to provide a regulated 5V output at currents up to 800mA and operates from input voltages up to 15V. This version uses Texas Instruments' DCY 4-terminal SOT-223 surface-mount package, providing a compact regulator suitable for board-level power supply and voltage-regulation applications. Texas Instruments identifies "VU" as the official top marking for the TLV1117-50IDCYR, matching the marking visible on these devices. The TLV1117 family is part of the important 1117-style generation of low-dropout linear regulators that became extremely common as electronics moved toward compact surface-mount construction. Texas Instruments documentation for the TLV1117 family dates back to December 2004, placing the device squarely in the period when SOT-223 regulators were becoming a familiar sight on computer peripherals, embedded control boards, communications equipment, instrumentation, consumer electronics, audio equipment and countless other assemblies needing a simple local regulated power rail. Instead of requiring a large traditional through-hole regulator and heatsink arrangement for modest loads, the SOT-223 format allowed designers to obtain useful current capability while using the circuit board copper itself as part of the thermal-management system. That history is one reason technicians still encounter 1117-family regulators on repair benches today. They became a workhorse solution for taking a higher DC supply and producing stable local rails for processors, logic circuits, interface electronics and other board sections. The 5V TLV1117-50 version is particularly useful wherever a regulated 5V rail is required without the switching circuitry and electrical noise of a switching converter. The familiar 1117 package style does not mean every 1117-type regulator is electrically interchangeable, however; technicians should always verify output voltage, pinout, dropout requirements, package footprint, capacitor requirements and thermal conditions before substitution.
Texas Instruments currently lists the exact TLV1117-50IDCYR as ACTIVE and Production. It is NOT obsolete, discontinued or EOL. TI specifies the part for -40°C to +125°C operation and lists the factory TLV1117-50IDCYR tape-and-reel configuration as 2,500 devices per reel. Current authorized-distributor pricing is inexpensive in production quantities, with recent single-piece distributor pricing around the fifty-cent range before handling and shipping, making this an active commodity regulator rather than a scarce legacy component. Because thermal dissipation becomes important as the difference between input and output voltage increases, the installer should verify the expected load current and available PCB copper area before using the regulator near its maximum 800mA rating.
