Original Mitsubishi 2SC2166 silicon NPN RF power transistor designed for HF mobile-radio and 27 MHz CB transmitter service. The 2SC2166 became widely used as an RF driver transistor feeding the higher-power final stage in classic CB radios. It is especially associated with the Cobra 2000 GTL transmitter section, where the 2SC2166 is used as the driver ahead of the 2SC1969 RF final. This exact NOS device carries the Mitsubishi logo and markings C2166 / 51AA-C and has been individually bench tested by RF Boneyard.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The Mitsubishi 2SC2166 comes from the classic generation of Japanese RF power transistors that became standard service-bench components during the peak CB-radio era. Mitsubishi designed the device for RF power amplification in HF mobile applications, with characteristics well suited to the 27 MHz citizens-band range. Its combination of useful RF gain, rugged power construction, and heatsink-mounting package made it a popular driver device in many transmitter designs. The Cobra 2000 GTL is one of the best-known radios associated with the 2SC2166 driver and 2SC1969 final combination.
