Original Mitsubishi 2SC2166 silicon NPN epitaxial planar RF power transistor designed specifically for HF mobile-radio power amplifier service. The device is rated for operation around the 27 MHz CB band and Mitsubishi specified a minimum 6 watt RF output under its published 12V / 27MHz test conditions. In classic CB equipment the 2SC2166 is particularly well known as an RF driver transistor feeding the higher-power final output device. It is associated with the Cobra 2000 GTL transmitter section, where service references identify the 2SC2166 as the driver used ahead of the 2SC1969 final. This exact device is marked C2166 / 51AA-C and has been individually bench tested by RF Boneyard. ([AlphaCron][1])

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The Mitsubishi 2SC2166 comes from the classic generation of Japanese RF power transistors that became standard service-bench components during the height of CB and HF mobile-radio manufacturing. Mitsubishi designed the device specifically for RF power amplification in HF mobile applications, with published characteristics centered on 27 MHz operation. Its combination of high RF gain, emitter-ballasted construction, and convenient heatsink-mounting package made it especially useful as a transmitter driver. The Cobra 2000 GTL is one of the best-known radios associated with the 2SC2166 driver / 2SC1969 final combination, and surviving service discussions continue to identify the 2166 as the proper driver device in these transmitters. As original Japanese RF semiconductors have become increasingly difficult to source, genuine Mitsubishi-marked 2SC2166 devices remain useful for restoration of classic CB transmitters rather than relying on questionable modern re-marked parts.
