Historical Note: Sprague Electric became one of America's best-known capacitor manufacturers during the 20th century and supplied components for radios, television equipment, communications systems, military electronics, test instruments, industrial controls, audio equipment, and professional electronic systems.Sprague's famous orange dipped capacitors became especially recognizable among radio technicians, television service shops, amplifier builders, and electronics repair professionals. Period Sprague catalogs described the Orange Drop DIFILM family as using a dual dielectric combining polyester film with special capacitor paper. The capacitor section was impregnated and then protected by a bright orange epoxy coating designed to resist moisture, heat, and mechanical damage.Components from this family were widely used for coupling, bypassing, filtering, tone circuits, timing networks, amplifier circuits, radio restoration, and other applications where stable capacitance and relatively high working voltage were required. The 4PS-S22 part number is associated with a military/National Stock Number cross-reference under NSN 5910-00-775-5141, demonstrating that this Sprague capacitor design was also cataloged for professional and government electronics supply channels. This original vintage Sprague capacitor is useful for restoration of period electronic equipment, tube amplifiers, vintage radios, communications equipment, test instruments, industrial electronics, and collector or repair bench stock.Buyer must verify capacitance, voltage requirements, physical dimensions, circuit position, and suitability before installation.

Compatible Radios / Boards

Suitable for vintage through-hole electronic equipment requiring a 0.022uF / 22nF capacitor rated at 600V DC or less. Potential applications include tube amplifiers, vintage radios, communications equipment, audio circuits, coupling networks, bypass circuits, filtering circuits, test equipment, and industrial electronics.

RF Boneyard Bench Notes

TEST RESULTS: Bench tested out of circuit with an LCR/capacitance meter. Repeated capacitance measurements were approximately 25.62nF to 26.63nF, including 26.19nF at 10kHz. Capacitor is marked 0.022uF / 22nF ±10%, giving a specified tolerance range of 19.8nF to 24.2nF. Measured capacitance is above the marked tolerance. Component is therefore identified as electrically out of capacitance specification. Leakage and insulation resistance were not tested.
