Full Description & History

Original vintage Duotone 846D/S diamond phonograph replacement needle supplied in its original Duotone retail case with factory identification card and printed installation instructions. Designed as a replacement needle for compatible Acos 73-series phonograph pickup cartridges, particularly the Acos 73-1 family.

This is a replacement needle only, NOT a complete phonograph cartridge or record player pickup assembly.

The needle features a removable stylus assembly intended for servicing vintage record players and stereo phonographs. The original packaging identifies the product as a stereo replacement needle and provides instructions for removing the worn needle and installing its replacement using the cartridge's retaining spring clip.

The original Duotone packaging identifies the company at Locust Street, Keyport, New Jersey. The reverse label includes historical diamond-tip identification information, describing orange coding for a 7 mil tip and natural coloring for a 3 mil tip. These printed references do not independently establish the exact tip configuration of this particular needle.

The replacement needle remains enclosed in its original vintage retail case. Original packaging and fitting instructions are included. The packaging exhibits age-related discoloration and storage wear.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Duotone was an American manufacturer and distributor of phonograph needles, replacement styli, and audio accessories based in Keyport, New Jersey. During the mid-20th century, the company supplied replacement needles for numerous makes and models of phonograph pickup cartridges, supporting the growing American record-player and high-fidelity audio service market.

Duotone replacement needles enabled owners and service technicians to replace worn stylus assemblies without purchasing complete new pickup cartridges. This was particularly important during the era when phonograph equipment relied on manufacturer-specific needle designs and retaining mechanisms.

Acos was a British audio equipment brand associated with Cosmocord Ltd., a company specializing in phonograph pickups, microphones, and electro-acoustic components. Cosmocord was established before World War II and moved operations from Enfield to Waltham Cross in 1956.

Acos developed crystal and ceramic phonograph pickup cartridges used in British and international record-playing equipment. These cartridges employed replaceable needles that converted record-groove movement into mechanical vibrations transmitted to the cartridge's pickup element.

During the transition from monophonic to stereophonic record reproduction in the late 1950s and early 1960s, replacement needle manufacturers supported increasingly specialized cartridge designs. Duotone marketed replacement needles and imported Acos-related audio products for the American market.

The Acos 73-series belongs to the generation of phonograph pickup cartridges that used removable needle assemblies held in place by mechanical retaining clips. The Duotone 846D/S was marketed as a replacement needle for this family. Vintage replacement references associate this Duotone designation with the Acos 73-1 cartridge, although individual cartridge variants require fitment verification.

The original Duotone 846D/S package preserves several historically significant details, including the manufacturer's Keyport, New Jersey address, printed needle replacement instructions, diamond-tip color identification, and a detachable product reordering tab.

Such packaging illustrates how replacement phonograph needles were distributed through electronics stores, record-player dealers, and radio and television service shops before modern digital audio technology.

Today, surviving vintage replacement needles such as the Duotone 846D/S remain useful for restoration of compatible period phonograph equipment. Original packaged examples also document the history of specialized audio replacement parts and the relationship between American aftermarket suppliers and British cartridge manufacturers.
