Full Description & History

Vintage brown resin-dipped radial-lead capacitor with a marking appearing to read 30000 ±10% EM. The marking is consistent with a nominal capacitance of 30,000pF (30nF / 0.03uF) and a ±10% tolerance.

The component was measured at 31.95nF, approximately 6.5% above its nominal value and within the indicated tolerance.

The capacitor features a dark brown molded or dipped body with two parallel wire leads. Its construction resembles older dipped film capacitors, although the exact dielectric material, manufacturer, part number, and voltage rating have not been independently established.

Suitable for vintage electronics restoration, component identification, and experimental applications where the capacitor's electrical specifications can be independently verified.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Dipped and molded capacitors became widely used during the expansion of printed circuit board manufacturing in the mid-twentieth century. Encapsulating capacitors in protective insulating compounds helped protect internal components from handling damage, contamination, and environmental exposure.

Polyester film, commonly known by the trade name Mylar, became an important capacitor dielectric because of its compact construction and useful electrical properties. Other film materials, along with molded and dipped mica technologies, were also widely employed in vintage electronic equipment.

Radial-lead dipped capacitors appeared in radios, television equipment, audio amplifiers, control circuits, and test instruments. Their compact form allowed straightforward installation on printed circuit boards.

The appearance of this component is consistent with vintage dipped capacitor construction, but its exact manufacturer, dielectric technology, and production period remain unidentified.

Potentially suitable for circuits requiring nominal 30nF (0.03uF) capacitance and ±10% tolerance, provided the voltage rating, dielectric characteristics, lead spacing, physical dimensions, and other specifications are independently verified. Do not install in mains-connected, high-voltage, or safety-critical circuits without establishing the necessary ratings.
